Editions are published quarterly. The next one is due at the end of the quarter following the snapshot above.
What the Factory Census counts
Every quarter we count the manufacturing facilities operating in the United States and publish the result as a fixed edition. The count is built from federal records — EPA, OSHA, SAM.gov and the U.S. Census — and every facility behind a figure has a page on this site naming the source of each field.
An edition is a snapshot. Once published it does not change: a correction becomes the next edition rather than an edit to an old one, so a figure quoted from an edition still reads the same a year later. That is the whole point of publishing it this way.
It is free, there is no login, and nothing on this site can be paid for. Quote it, chart it, or hand it to somebody who needs a number.
For reporters
The figures are free to publish. Credit FactoryRegistry Research and name the edition, so a reader can find the same snapshot you used — each edition carries a cite-as line ready to paste, and a methodology section stating what counts as a facility, what an operating signal is, and what the coverage benchmark measures.
Every edition breaks down by state, and each state has its own fact sheet built for printing — one page, county detail, subsector detail and the largest employers.
